Letter from the Tiretown Golf Club President

Good morning, everyone,

I want to express my appreciation for those of you who continue your unyielding support of our organization, which has had a busy 2024 so far. Yet, we have a great deal of work remaining — including the Ohio Cup at Good Park Golf Course Aug. 10, Tiretown Junior Golf Club Fundraiser Tournament at Mud Run Golf Course Sept. 14 and the scholarship banquet Oct. 19 at the Alpha Center.

This, too, has been a year in which our junior golf committee has tirelessly committed to enhancing the junior’s enrichment program — including their upcoming visit to Washington D.C. to tour the African American Museum and a recent trip to experience IndyCar racing at Mid-Ohio where the juniors had an opportunity to meet and chat with Indianapolis 500 champions and watch the best drivers in the world perform.

Of course, none of this is possible without your support. It’s your $75 contributions that enable us to enroll our juniors into the various classes at First Tee of Greater Akron. And those lessons parlayed an opportunity for two of our juniors — Matthias Miller and William Hardy — to play in a practice round with Black professional golfers of the APGA Tour at Firestone Country Club last month.

It’s important that we reward our juniors who excel in the classroom and remain steadfast in their commitment to Tiretown. For the next two weekends, the club’s split of the 50/50 will be donated to the juniors for their D.C. trip so they will have an opportunity to purchase valuable souvenirs. If you would like to contribute, please contact me or a junior committee member — Cynthia Blake, Michael Goode, Francine Blake.

Also, if any member is interested in making the trip to D.C., there are a limited number of seats still available. The two-day bus trip cost $250.

UPCOMING CLUB MEETING SEPT. 7

The Tiretown Golf Club meeting is scheduled for Sept. 7 at the Alpha Center. at 10 a.m. Please, if possible, make an effort to attend. There are a few important issues on the agenda — including membership and proposed structural changes within the organization’s various committees.

VOLUNTEER EFFORTS AT FIRESTONE COUNTRY CLUB

Again, we appreciate our members who dedicated their time to participate in two separate events at Firestone Country Club this past few weeks — APGA event and Kaulig Companies Championship. If you plan on playing in the NOGC scramble at Paradise Lakes on Sept. 21, please let me know as soon as possible. You can either put together your foursomes or you will be assigned one. If intereste, please make $80 payment to Tiretown Golf Charities by Sept. 7.

Again, thank you all for your commitment to Tiretown.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD NOMINATIONS

As a reminder, nominations for Tiretown’s Distinguished Service Award are due prior to September 1.
