AKRON, Ohio – Even on a day when heavy rain threatened to overshadow its diamond anniversary, Tiretown Golf Club and Tiretown Golf Charities enjoyed a successful 75th annual scholarship tournament at J.E. Good Park on June 28.

More than 130 golfers and 20 volunteers pulled together to help America’s largest Black golf club raise more than $20,000 for its scholarship program – a record fundraising effort. Tiretown, the PGA Tour Champions Charity of the Year in 2024, awarded five $3,000 scholarships and two $500 book scholarships to Summit County high school graduates.

“It is our collective goal as members to help provide opportunities for our scholars to compete academically in college, so they can position themselves to give back to their communities in the near future,” said Tiretown president Ralph N. Paulk. “Our commitment is to help them achieve their greatest aspirations.

“I’m extremely proud of our members, who went all in this year. They recognize the challenges and hurdles facing our young men and women during an uncertain, unpredictable climate.

“Additionally, we want to thank all the sponsors who have been significant contributors during our 75th anniversary,” Paulk added. “It’s more than about the money. It’s about them digging into the trenches with us, and fighting for the young people who understand what hard work looks like.”

Tiretown, whose 55 volunteers were the most of any charitable organization during the Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club a week earlier, were aided by more than 120 financial supporters of its scholarship endowment – including small businesses, individual contributors and corporate sponsors.

“I think this was the best scholarship tournament that we have had,” said Clarence Mitchell, Tiretown’s director of golf activities. “We had a team all working together to make it a successful tournament, and we are encouraged about the future.”

Towpath Credit Union committed to a five-year sponsorship agreement with Tiretown Golf Charities. It was this year’s presenting sponsor with a $7,500 contribution.

Other corporate sponsors were: Wayside Furniture, Ace Tax, Dick’s Sporting Goods/Golf Galaxy, ASW Global, Northern Ohio Golf Charities and Kaulig Companies ($10,000), Northern Ohio Golf Association, and the PGA Tour, which donated $30,000 earlier this year.

“We recognize that our success is tied directly to our relationships with our partners and supporters,” Paulk said. “Our goal moving forward is to build on those relationships so we can maintain a strong, viable scholarship program that is sustainable for the next 75 years.”

The scholarship recipients will be honored during the 8th annual Tiretown Scholarship Banquet on Oct. 18 at Firestone Country Club. The cost is $40, and can be paid online at tgcharities.org or by mail at P.O. Box 562, Akron, Ohio 44309.

In addition, Tiretown will host the Swing, Sip and Socialize, Part II at Mud Run Golf Course this Sunday, July 13. The event, which is focused on women golfers, will be held from 3 to 6 p.m., and is free to the public. There will be vendors, prizes and food; golf equipment testing and lessons by a PGA professional.
